Do Pop Up Campers Have Bathrooms?
The short answer is sometimes, but not always.
It’s the first question people ask when renting a pop up camper. It depends on the size of the camper and how it is set up.
At All Campers in St. Cloud, we get this question a lot from families and first time renters. Let us break it down in a clear and honest way so you know what to expect before your trip.
Most Pop Up Campers Do Not Have Full Bathrooms
Traditional pop up campers are built to be lightweight and easy to tow. Because of that, most standard ones do not include a full bathroom with a toilet, sink, and shower.
Instead, they focus on sleeping space, a small kitchen area, and comfortable seating. This keeps the camper simple and affordable, which is one reason pop up campers are so popular in Minnesota.
If you are used to larger travel trailers or motorhomes, this can come as a surprise. But for many campers, the trade off is worth it.
Some Campers Have Small Toilet Options
While full bathrooms are rare, some pop up campers do offer limited bathroom features.
You may find a cassette toilet or a portable toilet in certain models. These are small toilets designed for short trips and emergencies. They are usually stored under a seat or inside a small privacy tent area.
A few campers also come with an outdoor shower hookup. This is mainly used for rinsing off after swimming or washing up at the campsite. It is not the same as a full indoor shower, but it can be very useful. Also read about do campers have showers?
Privacy Is Different in a Pop Up Camper
They use soft canvas sides when set up. Because of this, privacy works a little differently than in a hard sided camper.
If there is a toilet, it usually comes with a curtain or privacy enclosure. It works fine for basic needs, but it is not soundproof or fully enclosed like a regular bathroom.
For many campers, campground restrooms are still the main option.
Campgrounds in Minnesota Make It Easy
One big advantage of camping in Minnesota is the quality of our campgrounds. Many state parks and private campgrounds near St. Cloud offer clean bathrooms, hot showers, and laundry areas. Read about How to unclog an RV toilet
Because of this, many renters are perfectly comfortable choosing a pop up camper without a bathroom. You get the fun of camping with access to good facilities nearby.
If you plan to stay at established campgrounds, not having a bathroom in your camper is usually not a problem.
When a Bathroom Might Matter More
There are situations where having a bathroom can be helpful.
If you plan to camp off grid or at very remote sites, campground bathrooms may not be available. Families with young children often prefer having at least a portable toilet inside the camper. Night time bathroom trips are easier and safer.

Why Many People Still Love Pop Up Campers
Even without a full bathroom, those campers remain a favorite choice for many renters.
They are easier to tow with smaller vehicles. They use less fuel than larger campers. Setup is simple and quick once you get the hang of it. They also give you a closer connection to the outdoors while still providing real beds and a kitchen.
For weekend trips, family vacations, and Minnesota summer camping, pop up campers are a great balance of comfort and simplicity.
