Camper Maintenance Checklist: The Ultimate Guide
Hey there, neighbors! At All Campers here in St. Cloud, we live for the open road. But if there’s one thing that can put a damper on a trip to the North Shore or a weekend at the lake, it’s a mechanical surprise.
The "Road-Ready" Exterior
- Tire Health: Check for "flat spots" if the camper has been sitting. Inflate them to the PSI listed on the sidewall. Don't forget to check the spare!
- Wheel Bearings: If you own your camper, these should be greased once a year. If they get too dry, they can overheat and seize up on the highway.
- Tighten the Lugs: Use a lug wrench to ensure every bolt on the wheels is tight.
- Roof Inspection: Look for "alligatoring" (cracks that look like lizard skin) in the sealant. In Minnesota, the freeze-thaw cycle is brutal on roof seals.

Deep Dive: The Water System
- Sanitize the Fresh Tank: Run a mixture of water and a little bit of bleach through your system, let it sit, then flush it until the bleach smell is gone. This kills any "funk" from the off-season.
- Check the Water Heater: Make sure the bypass valve is in the right position and check the "anode rod" (the big bolt at the bottom) to see if it’s eaten away. If it is, replace it!
- Seal Test: Pressurize the system with your pump. If the pump "cycles" (turns on for a second) while all the faucets are off, you have a leak somewhere.

The Power & Propane Check
- Battery Load Test: A battery might show 12 volts but fail as soon as you turn on a light. If it’s more than 3-5 years old, have it tested.
- The "Sniff" Test: Turn on your propane and smell around the regulator and tanks. Use soapy water in a spray bottle on the connections—if it bubbles, you’ve got a leak.
- Ground Faults (GFCI): Test the reset buttons on your outlets to make sure they'll actually trip if there’s a power surge.
Interior "Quality of Life" Items
- Slide-Out Lubrication: Use a dry silicone spray on the slide tracks so they move smoothly without squeaking or binding.
- Bug Patrol: Check exterior vents (like the furnace and fridge vents) for wasp or bird nests. These are popular real estate for critters in Central MN!
- AC Filter: Pop the cover off your air conditioner and rinse the foam filter. It’ll blow colder and run quieter.
