Pop up campers, also called tent trailers, are known for being lightweight, affordable, and easy to tow. They fold down into a low profile for travel and expand at the campsite with canvas sides and slide out beds. Because of this design, they are very different from travel trailers or motorhomes. That difference affects whether air conditioning is included.
Most campers do not come with AC as a standard feature. Many entry level models are built to keep weight low and costs down. Adding air conditioning increases both weight and price, so manufacturers often leave it out unless the buyer requests it. Older campers almost never have AC unless it was added later.
Many newer vehicles can include AC as an option. Some brands offer a roof mounted air conditioner, similar to what you see on larger RVs, but smaller and lighter. Others use a built in wall unit designed specifically for pop up campers. These systems are made to cool a smaller space and work within the camper’s electrical limits.
There are also portable air conditioner options. Some vehicles use small window style AC units or portable floor units that vent through a window or canvas panel. These are not factory installed, but they can work well if set up correctly. However, they take up space and still require a steady power source.
In Minnesota, this matters more in mid summer than people expect. July and August in the St. Cloud area can bring high humidity and warm nights. During the day, opening windows and using fans is often enough. At night, especially during heat waves, AC can make sleeping much more comfortable.
Many pop up camper owners are perfectly happy without AC. Camping near lakes, in shaded campgrounds, or during spring and fall often does not require cooling at all. Pop up campers work best in mild weather, which is when many people use them most.
If you are renting a pop up camper, always ask if it has AC before booking. Some rental units include it, others do not. If cooling is important to you, confirm that the campground you plan to stay at has electrical hookups that support air conditioning. Without hookups, the AC will not be usable.
If you already own a pop up camper without AC, adding one may be possible, but it should be done carefully. Roof strength, weight limits, and electrical capacity all matter. Improper installation can cause damage or safety issues. A professional RV service shop can inspect your camper and explain your options.
